Gratitude | Self Portrait
Today began as Armistice Day as a way to commemorate the armistice between the Allies and Germany on the western front in World War I which took effect at eleven in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"of 1918. In 1954, it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars and the name was changed to Veterans Day. This is the cemetery at my church, where many of my relatives are buried. My great grandfather, Claiborne Preston Rankin, was a veteran of World War I, and the plaque just behind me is in honor of his being awarded the Silver Star for getting messages across enemy lines in the Argonne Forest.
