Merry Christmas!

Below are some larger images of the pictures from this year's Christmas card with brief explanations of them.

In March we traveled to Florida to watch a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center.  A SpaceX rocket launched the NROL-69 payload.  We spent most of the day out at the launch viewing area.

In July, Preston and Jordan got engaged at the cabin in West Virginia.  This picture was taken in Hawai'i Volcanoes Park in September.

At the end of September, we all traveled to the Big Island of Hawai'i.  David and Kanoa were celebrating their 30th anniversary.  The background of the front side of the card is sunset from the Royal Kona Hotel's oceanfront restaurant, where we stayed a couple of nights at the beginning of the 10-day trip.

David and I visited Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, a place of refuge and royal grounds.  While there I found some kanoa, which are bowls carved into rock.  These may have been used to dye kapa (bark cloth), to tan fishing nets, or to pound 'awa root.  Here I am posing with them.

We attended the obligatory luau at the Hilton in Waikoloa.  After a miscommunication about the time which led to a wait in the reception area, it was a nice time with good food and an entertaining show.

On September 29 we visited Hawai'i Volcanoes Park and were rewarded with volcanic activity at Kilauea.

On October 1 we traveled to Maunakea.  All of us went to the visitor's center (at 9,200 feet above sea level), and later the guys drove up to the summit, which is over 13,000 feet above sea level, and attended a star talk at the visitor's center.  Maunkea is home to several telescopes.

For the bulk of our trip we stayed at Castle Resorts' Hali'i Kai at Waikoloa.

We spent many mornings and evenings at the oceanfront pool and restaurant, where there was a nightly sunset ceremony.

The background picture on the back of the card is sunset on our last night at Hali'i Kai.

After checking out of Hali'i Kai, David and I drove north from Waikoloa to Kapa'au in search of the famous statue of King Kamehameha I which is in front of the North Kohala Civic Center.  We continued to drive the whole way around the island, stopping in Waimea for lunch, and then continuing to Hilo to walk in the Lili'uokalani Gardens before returning to Kona to spend one more night at the Royal Kona.

We enjoyed many other things on the big island such as touring a coffee farm, trekking to South Point, stopping at a local chocolate factory store, stumbling across a local farm store, and finding a great local beach to watch a final sunset.

We enjoyed many good meals.  We enjoyed fine dining at Merriman's and a couple of local spots: Hawaiian Style Cafe (just down the road from Merriman's) and K's Drive-In near Hilo, and many types of restaurants in between.

In the fall Ian moved back to Virginia from Maryland and is currently working at a bakery in Warrenton.  There were many other good times and fun events throughout the year, too many to include in a quick recap.

Muffin

It's always easy to pop into the grocery store before work.  There were lots of muffins from which to choose.  I narrowed it down to these two.

Shadow

It has mostly been a cloudy day, but I did see this in the sky as I was leaving work this morning.

Where I Stand

I forgot to bring an extra water with me so before work I went into the grocery store in the shopping center where I work.  They have this mosaic at the entrance that resembles a compass rose.

Outside

This was taken from outside the business where I work.  We were closed on Monday and Tuesday because the restaurant next door had some kind of water problem that caused three businesses to partially flood.  My boss was able to move to an empty space a few doors away; that business had just moved out at the end of the previous week.  The other crazy thing is that this same thing happened four years ago too.

Low Light

Not an especially pretty picture, but it's definitely a low light situation when I leave work during the winter.  This is the view from the shopping center where I work down to the street below (the shopping center sits atop a hill).

At 10 o'clock I often head out the door for the day's activities.  Options for the day include deciding whether or not I need a jacket and whether or not to go to the gym.

These trees are flowering all over Warrenton right now.  I have been looking for a reason to take a picture of them, and today's prompt gave me the perfect opportunity.

Kindred

Picture Life | 100 steps
I usually park about 100 steps from the door at work.  During the summer we do theme days to make things a little more fun.  We do things like cool sunglasses day, wear your favorite pattern, tell an instructor a joke or riddle, etc.  Today's theme was Hawaiian so I wore a shirt that I found in my husband's side of the closet.

Incredible

Picture Color | Scarlet

Happy Pi Day! (That's pi; not pie.) Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek polymath and is best known for being the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth. Pi is the the Greek number that represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is a number that is infinite and without repetition beyond its decimal point.  Today at work we had a Pi Day Celebration that included games, food (pizza, of course), prizes, and a pie eating contest.  We had a full house of current students, siblings, friends, parents (and possibly some grandparents), and former students.

Picture Life | Life-long Learning
In addition to new instructor training where I work, there are also additional levels of training that we can take.  I have attempted to start the Level 2 Instructor training a couple of times, but there are always more pressing things to do so I have not finished it yet.  Additionally, one can also review math topics in order to assist students with their homework.

Charming

Picture Life | What's New?
No charm bracelets for me, but what's new is the snowflake pan I bought before Christmas.  I was going to make some brownies in it for Christmas, but after my surgery I wasn't up for making anything.  Our work Christmas party is tonight, and a few days ago my boss asked if I wanted to make a dessert for it since I had made some last year.  At first I was going to decline, but I changed my mind because I remembered that I had this pan and the ingredients for brownies.  So here is the finished product.  I hope everyone finds it charming and delicious.
