During the summer at the math-only tutoring center where I work (Mathnasium in case you've heard of it), we like to make things fun and interesting for the students.  We do fun days, play lots of math games, and have summer camp themes for several weeks to give students a little break from their regular work.  The summer camp themes try to tie math concepts to other concepts like baking, programming, outer space, etc.  This summer I volunteered to lead two different weeks (What was I thinking?!?!).  Back in June I did two sessions on architecture and the need to understand the mathematical concept of scale.  This week I just finished two sessions on mathematical art.  On Tuesday we talked about cubism and de stijl and the kids created their own art with geometric shapes.  Today we talked about pointillism and the kids used a coordinate plane to color in a picture.  I decided to color my own version of it, and here it is.

This is another picture I made to demonstrate pointillism.

Bedtime

Picture More | Change
My younger son's bed is empty at bedtime these days because he was able to extend his job through the fall at the camp where he worked this summer.  It's strange to be empty nesters, even if it might only be temporary.

My youngest son left for his summer job after church this morning.  He will be working as a lifeguard and summer staffer at our church district's camp.  I got a picture of his car leaving the parking lot.  "Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers!  Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother.' " ~Mark 3:34-35

Summer Camp 2011

Bean writes from camp...

To: Family

So we moved to cabin 5 because bees came into cabin 4 and stung a kid. But otherwise the week has been fine. We went caving today and in case you don't know what day it is, it is Tuesday.

Love,

June 27-July 2 Junior 3/5 and Middler 6/8 camps at Shepherd's Spring

Both boys attended, and I went as a counselor for the Junior3/5 girls.

July 5 – 9 Liberty High School Basketball Camp

Only P attended this half day camp.

July 12-16 and July 18-23 Fredericksburg Parks & Rec Summer Fun Camp

This is our favorite area day camp. Only Bean is still old enough for it.

July 18-23 Bayport Scout Reservation

P's Boy Scout troop attended. Nearly every boy attended this summer.

July 26-30 Allegro's Give My Regards To Broadway Camp

Bean enjoyed this day camp where they learned a mini-musical and performed it on Friday. They did a scene and a song from Annie, High School Musical, and the Sound of Music.

August 16-20 Webelos Advancement Camp at Camp William B. Snyder

The Webelos from Bean's Cub Scout pack had a week of fun here. I, along with 3 dads and 1 other mom, supervised 8 boys while they participated in various Scouting activities.

August 23-25 Potomac Nationals Baseball Camp

Both boys learned baseball skills at this 3-day camp taught by minor league baseball players. Additionally, they each received 2 tickets to a game.
