Stillness

For several days, including today, this is how I spent most of the day - sleeping on the sofa.  I often had the phone, a bottle of water, and either ginger ale or Gatorade next to me.

Treat

Picture Color | Rainbow | Scavenger Hunt
This took me a long time to finish because the day fell on one of the early days when I was falling ill (and was out of commission for nearly two weeks).  I had already taken nearly all of the pictures but between being sick, keeping up with current photo posts, and getting ready for Christmas, I had very little time to organize the pictures and make the collage.  I finally had time to put it all together.  Lately, I've been using Canva to make collages because I have found it to be easier to work with than Lightroom.
Red: Lego-themed candles on my son's birthday French silk pie
Orange: Showing my alma mater's colors for the big game against our in state rival
Yellow: My son's new Hufflepuff Lego creation
Green: My Lego advent wreath
ROYGBIV: My favorite fuzzy scarf
Blue: Cavman is blue because we lost the big game
Purple: Some decorative flowers I have in my dining room
White: My Cabbage Patch doll
Pink: A Care Bear

Self-motivation

Picture Color | Rainbow
This week I have been noticing a lot of things that I have that come in a rainbow of colors. The other night I realized that my car collection has nearly all of the colors of a rainbow!  A couple of things that motivate me are to learn new photography techniques and features on my camera and hoping to bring a little bit of joy to someone else with my photographs.

Joy

Brightly colored pens give me joy.  So much so that I apparently bought two packages of these gel pens.  I even rearranged one of them so that they more closely matched the proper sequence of a rainbow.

The communion table at church had a rainbow of colors on it spilling from the cornucopia in honor of Thanksgiving.  "And why do you worry about clothes? Picture Style | Night
This is my first really good picture of the moon.  I don't think I had ever really thought about how fast the moon is moving or how bright it actually is so my setting were always off.  The November full moon is called the Beaver Moon.  According to the Old Farmers Almanac website it is the time when beavers finished preparations for winter and retreated into their lodges.  Settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/250 second.

I originally had a different thought for this picture but decided that it might not be a wise idea to try to set up my tripod on the side of a country road in the dark.  Instead, I just went with a simple still life in my dark dining room.

I was looking forward to attempting the light painting technique that was described, but unfortunately I forgot my flashlight.  Rainy weather was preparing to begin so I just upped the ISO and used a low aperture to get enough light for this picture.  This is the office for the Christian school that is a ministry of my church.  ISO: 1600, F-stop: f/4, Exposure: 4 seconds.

Empowerment

Picture You | Gratitude
Nearly every year for somewhere close to 20 years I have participated in a charity walk for Church World Service.  Over the years there have been many taglines for this walk.  One is: "We walk because they walk."  We walked approximately 3 miles today because 3.1 miles represents the average distance to clean water in developing countries, often traveled each way daily by women and girls to bring back clean water for their families.  Another tagline has been: "Ending hunger one step at a time."  I feel empowered when I help raise money for this organization, knowing that it is going to a good cause.  I'm also grateful that I am in a position to both walk and help raise money.  I had intended to try to get myself in a picture, but it's hard to walk and try to take a selfie at the same time.  As you can see, we even had a police escort for part of our walk. Reflective

Gratitude | Self Portrait

Today began as Armistice Day as a way to commemorate the armistice between the Allies and Germany on the western front in World War I which took effect at eleven in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"of 1918.  In 1954, it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars and the name was changed to Veterans Day.  This is the cemetery at my church, where many of my relatives are buried.  My great grandfather, Claiborne Preston Rankin, was a veteran of World War I, and the plaque just behind me is in honor of his being awarded the Silver Star for getting messages across enemy lines in the Argonne Forest.

Early

Picture You | Gratitude
Almost six years ago I had a very bad experience with sciatica. After having imaging done, my doctor said that I might need surgery or at the very least try epidural injections.  I asked if there were any other options and she said that I could try physical therapy.  I picked the physical therapy.  I went to the office once or twice a week and learned how to do the exercises, which they had me do at home on the off days.  To this day I start my day with stretches to help prevent it from happening again.  So here I am early in the morning stretching my legs and back.  I'm very grateful that I haven't had any additional severe sciatic pain since then.

Thankful

Picture You | Gratitude
With Veteran's Day and both my birthday and my father's birthday approaching,  it provides an opportunity for me to remember how thankful I am for my father.  I have many wonderful memories of trips we took, help on homework that he provided, career guidance he gave, and many more things.  His time in the military helped to shape him into the man he became and provided him the opportunity to attend college.  He passed away in 2006, and I'm glad that he was around for my sons to get to know him too.  "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." ~Matthew 7:24

Birthday celebrations are continuing in advance of my actual birthday.  Tonight we ate dinner at the Melting Pot.  It was a new experience for us but definitely a lot of fun.  I was so hungry when we got there that I forgot to take a picture of the appetizer course.  We got the Wisconsin cheddar fondue, and it came with apples, bread, and vegetables.  Next was the salad course.  I think mine was called bacon Parmesan or something similar.

For the main course I got the land and sea option, which came with salmon, shrimp, chicken, and steak.  David had an Asian themed plate.  We got the Mojo seasoned pot to cook everything.  The entree course also includes vegetables like potatoes, broccoli, and mushrooms that get cooked also.

Quite a number of tasty sauces accompany the main course as well.

For the dessert course we chose the dark chocolate fondue, and it came with a lot of different items to dip.

Off Prompt

Today I spent several hours with my BFF celebrating my birthday.  We had a long lunch and then wandered around Davis Street in downtown Culpeper.  Here are a few pictures from the afternoon.

I had the pepper steak, which was a peppercorn-encrusted, pan-seared sirloin in traditional green peppercorn cognac sauce served over potato gratin with green beans, from It's About Thyme.

After lunch I had a piece of flourless chocolate cake for dessert.

Serendipity

It was serendipity that I took a detour on Monday and happened to find this silo.  Silo and barn art seems to have become a thing in my area, and I love when I find new ones, especially when they are as pretty as these sunflowers.  I love that there are so many curves here too: the top of the silo, the roundness of the silo itself, and the shape of the flowers.

I was back at the gym today.  I am trying to get back into the routine of going, and I have made it at least once a week for three weeks in a row.  This is a curved wall in front of the indoor pool.  I've been coming to this gym for quite a few years now, maybe 15, but I'm not totally sure, and I have never been on the other side of this wall to see what the outdoor patio is like.
