Victorious

Picture Color | Yellow
I noticed this morning as I was preparing to serve as worship leader at church that the communion table was decorated with yellow straw and wheat.  The reason for this is that we have partnered with other local churches from our denomination to support a ministry called Growing Hope Globally by sponsoring a project in Guatemala.  In order to help fund this project we had wheat planted in a field adjacent to our church.  The wheat was recently harvested and sold, hence the wheat and straw at church today.  "So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God." ~Luke 12:21

Joy

Reading gives me lots of joy, especially when I can relax on the weekends with a good book.  Here are a few selections that I am currently reading.

Curious

Picture Style | Double Exposure
I had an appointment with my retina specialist today; I have a freckle on my retina that needs to be monitored yearly.  That gave me the idea to try to photograph my eye. (Not as easy as it sounds.  Autofocus doesn't seem to want to work, and even when I think I have it in focus manually, I apparently don't.)  Then I thought that it would be fun to superimpose a globe over my eye since I am curious about the world and love to travel.  My accomplishments aren't as stellar as some people I know, but I have been to 46 states, 7 Canadian provinces, 3 or 4 Mexican states, the Bahamas, Spain, and Morocco.  And the globe is a travel memory in itself because we purchased it in Alaska.

Cheery

Taking a break from double exposures.  These are more volunteer plants that are blooming in my yard.  I don't remember planting them, but it's possible that my mom did and I just don't remember.  In any event, I don't even know what they are, but they are a cheery sight out my bedroom sliding glass door.

Faith

Picture Style | Double Exposure
Today is my husband's birthday so I tried to combine a picture that I took of him on a hike on Skyline Drive probably close to 30 years ago with the message board that I left for him today.  I have faith that he will be around the celebrate many more birthdays.

Welcome

Picture Style | Double Exposure
I actually had an idea for this that worked.  I combined a picture of the welcome screen from church this morning with the welcome sign outside our door. "After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' " ~1 Kings 19: 12-13

Spirit

Picture You | What I do | Scavenger Hunt
I really dread the scavenger hunt prompts.  Taking one picture a day is sometimes a challenge for me, let alone nine.  Then there's the whole ordeal of making the collage with nine photos.  I think I need to remember to take them all in landscape format since the vertical ones don't format right in a grid.  Part of the way through taking pictures I tried going with a theme of using UVA gear, which worked well, because of the school spirit involved.  I didn't feel like going back and trying to find UVA themed objects for the other three pictures.

Round: UVA basketball
Colorful: Fresh veggies from the garden; they feed the spirit
Soft: Our cat Ripley, who is very spirited
Small: Earrings
With polka dots: A heart-shaped dish
Vintage: CavMan; the Cavalier has been UVA's mascot since 1925
Delicious: A UVA cookie jar and a cookie from Crumbl
Sparkly: My sparkliest UVA shirt
With words: A t-shirt showing the whole NCAA bracket to celebrate UVA's championship in 2019

Picture You | What I do | Picture the Alphabet
Today I put up my summer wreath, which conveniently looks like an O and contains lots of my favorite color purple.  P is for my son Preston and is found on a Preston Trucking patch ("the 151 line") that we found when he was little.  Today it marks his mailbox bin at our house.

We spent part of the day at a friend's housewarming, and my intention was to get pictures of kids playing in the yard, but I totally forgot.  And then it started raining.  Shortly after we left their house, we noticed a stunning rainbow over Culpeper.  So here a few images of it since all is well once you see the rainbow.

Lovely

Picture More | Toys
During the summer at the math-only tutoring center where I work (Mathnasium in case you've heard of it), we like to make things fun and interesting for the students.  We do fun days, play lots of math games, and have summer camp themes for several weeks to give students a little break from their regular work.  The summer camp themes try to tie math concepts to other concepts like baking, programming, outer space, etc.  This summer I volunteered to lead two different weeks (What was I thinking?!?!).  Back in June I did two sessions on architecture and the need to understand the mathematical concept of scale.  This week I just finished two sessions on mathematical art.  On Tuesday we talked about cubism and de stijl and the kids created their own art with geometric shapes.  Today we talked about pointillism and the kids used a coordinate plane to color in a picture.  I decided to color my own version of it, and here it is.

This is another picture I made to demonstrate pointillism.

Mind-blowing

Picture Color | Silver
I was driving home earlier today, pondering what I could photograph that was mind blowing, when I spotted some parachutists.  So I pulled into the local airport hoping I could maybe get a picture of one of them.  I didn't have an open view of the sky, but I finally spotted one of them.  Unfortunately by the time I got the camera ready, he had gone behind some trees.  As I sat in my car thinking about what to do, I noticed that the airport was framed in my (silver) mirror.  It's pretty mind-blowing that one can hop into a plane a few miles from my house and jump out of it with a parachute!

Miracle

Picture Color | Silver
It's a miracle that I was able to take this picture today.  The sermon at church was on John 15: 1-11, and I remembered that I had this curio and thought it was gray, which I thought I could call close to silver.  In looking at it, it looked more greenish gray.  So I thought I would get out some silver goblets that we received for our wedding to go with it.  They were quite tarnished, and I couldn't find any silver polish.  I had to pick some up at the grocery store and then clean them up.  So here I present to you my miracle picture for the day.  "I am the vine; you are the branches." ~John 15-5a

Stupendous

Picture Style | Long Exposure
From the archives.  Last year on the Fourth of July, my husband and I went to a baseball game and then there were fireworks afterward.  We each had a DSLR and took pictures.  I had wanted to do a post on my blog comparing some of our photos, but I never got around to it.  This is as good a time as any to do a brief comparison since I'm not sure that we'll get out to see any fireworks this year.

First up my husband's photo near the end of the display: ISO 800, f/5.6, 1.3 seconds

Here are a couple of mine that I really liked.  ISO 1600, f/4.5, 1/160 second

ISO 1600, f/4.5, 1/250 second

In the future, I think I will definitely bring a tripod so that I can lengthen my exposure time and use a smaller aperture.
