Breathtaking

Every year our bowling league buys toys for  the local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) group.  This is a national association of volunteers that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children.  It's breathtaking to see the generosity.  The toys and boxes combine all different colors also.

This was another picture I had taken at church yesterday.  This is a Chrismon tree, which is a contraction of the words “Christ Monogram.”  The Chrismons are religious symbols that represent the Christian faith and tell the story of Christmas.  The tree is typically evergreen, and the Chrismons are white and gold.  White signifies the liturgical color of Christmas signifying joy and holiness, and the gold signifies the glory, majesty, and kingship of Jesus.

It's the first Sunday of Advent and the church is decorated to celebrate the season.  "Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.  Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.  Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come." ~Matthew 24:40-42

Knowledgeable

Today we went to the Mexican Geniuses exhibit in Washington, D. C. to experience the artwork and story of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.  This is an equipale barrel chair handcrafted in Jalisco, Mexico.   They were in multiple locations around the exhibit for people to sit in.

Mexican Geniuses Exhibit

Today we went to see the Mexican Geniuses installation in Washington, D. C.  It was an interesting exhibit that combined details about the lives and art of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.  Here are some of the other displays that I found interesting.

The Wounded Table/La mesa herida (1940) - re-created as an interactive life size diorama.  The original was donated to the former Soviet Union and appeared in the opening of the "International Exhibition of Surrealism."  However, it disappeared after an exhibition in Warsaw, Poland, in 1955.

The Two Fridas (1939)

Frieda and Diego Rivera, 1931 (Also known as the Wedding Portrait).  This is painted on the curtain separating the kitchen room from the 360 degree immersive room.

A photograph of Frida and Diego.

A few pictures of the changing scenes from the 360 degree immersive room.  Briefly we had it all to ourselves.

Here are a couple of not very good selfies taken with my tablet in the immersive room.

Another interactive piece taken from Diego Rivera's mural Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park/SueƱo de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central (1948).  The detail pictures Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as a boy along with the Dame Catrina (La Calavera Catrina) and Jose Guadalupe Posada, the Mexican engraver who popularized the skeleton figure parodying vanity.

Additionally, because they ran out of VIP bands for the virtual reality portion, we were given these cute cutouts. They invoke the images of Frida Kahlo's style of dress and Diego Rivera's painting of the Flower Carrier.

Lastly, as part of the VIP ticket, we were able to pick out two posters from the selection that they had for sale.  We picked out A Christmas Tradition/La Posada (1953) by Diego Rivera and Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (1940) by Frida Kahlo.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wishing all of my friends and family a very happy Thanksgiving!  We spent our first Thanksgiving at Preston's apartment.  Here are some pictures of the food and fun.

Preston had to chop the head off the butter turkey.

My plate.

Breaking the wishbone.

Winnie was very excited to have visitors to her home.

Preston and Jordan wore Thanksgiving themed shirts for the occasion.

Victory

Picture Color | Brown
This year I made two new cheesecakes for Thanksgiving dinner.  I think that's a victory.  The small ones are pumpkin cheesecakes with ginger snap and pecan crust, and the large one is a chocolate orange supreme cheesecake.

Unfortunately our team's performance was less than impressive today since we lost all of the games.  It was still fun to bowl with friends and share some treats with everyone.  Just a picture of my favorite bowling ball on the brown lanes.

Encouraging

My son brought home a ton of cookies from Crumbl, his workplace.  I plan to take them to bowling as an encouragement to others tomorrow.  The ones in this box are maple cinnamon roll, cranberry white chip, and pumpkin pie (I think).

Friendly

Picture Style | Animal
This afternoon a few of us gathered at church to pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.  The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. Through this project, Samaritan’s Purse partners with the local church worldwide to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and make disciples of the nations.  These cute dinosaurs will be a friendly toy for the children who receive them. "Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth.  The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind." ~Isaiah 65:17

Vigorous

Picture You | Gratitude | Picture My World
The fourth picture in the Picture My World series for 2022.  All featured a holly tree in the woods in front of our house.  I feel like I should have taken the fall picture a week or so ago because the fall picture looks a lot like the winter picture since the leaves have mostly fallen now.  The major difference is that today was an unusually warm day for November so I was in short sleeves and no jacket.

In addition to completing the Picture My World series, my mom and I walked 2.7 miles for the Southern Fauquier CROP Walk, which was definitely a vigorous walk. It was a nice sunny day for it, if not a bit warm for a November morning. This walk, along with others, supports CWS and helps families who are struggling with hunger. We're asking you to join us - with your donations - to provide more meals for the growing number of people in our community who need them, and greater food security in communities around the world.
